Family Fun Day

The FBCBNA Family Fun Day was exciting! The weather was sunny and warm. We had agood representation of chapter members, and their families. Moonwalks and games were provided by Berber and Company. Music was provided by disc jockey, Ronald Toussaint. We relaxed and danced, as the music filled the air. Bessie Trammell, Chairperson for the event, added something special to the occasion, in the form of a delicious cake. Bessie Trammell shared responsibility for organizing the Family Fun Day with our founder, executive director, Lola Denise Jefferson.

By Janice Sanders, MS, BS, RN

The year-long mentoring program, sponsored by FBCBNA, culminated in anarray of descriptive presentations by professionals in various nursing specialties. During the past year, students were presented with options to visit professional nursing settings, shadow nurses as they performed some daily routines, and to interview professional nurses to understand what is required to become a nurse. It was also instructive for youth, who are in elementary, junior and senior high school, to see models of professional academic preparation, and to interact with persons who have accepted the challenge of professional preparation. The guest presenters on the program were uniquely prepared to respond to all of the students’ questions. Thirty seven of the youth who had participated in the mentorship program, attended the annual program. FBCBNA expressed its appreciation to the presenters, and the volunteers who made the program a success.

By Kendrick Clack, BS, RN, and Yvonne Olusi, BS, RN, COS-C, CLNC

The FBCBNA annual Spring Fling was held on March 24, 2012. The event, this year, was facilitated by Yvonne Olusi, FBCBNA President and Kendrick Clack, FBCBNA Board Member. There was a full agenda and the facilitators provided a wealth of knowledge and resources to participants. Emphasis was placed on the importance of joining professional organizations. Students and new nurses often underestimate the need for their voices, in the effort to improve nursing practice. They also miss out on professional networking and mentorships that are readily available within these organizations. Other topics discussed were: continuing education, job-seeking tips, board review, and the variety of career paths offered in nursing. Those in attendance left with the latest professional information and resources, provided by our local nursing schools. We look forward to seeing you next year!
